How to fix/repair a corrupt hard drive in Windows 10?
If you are trying to fix the hard drive, you have important data, you should use Photo Recovery software, before moving away from photos, music, video and other files, they go forever. Now, to fix the hard disk drive which has become rogue, we should start with the basics because we have to ensure that the hard drive is corrupt or not.
It may be possible that the problem was nothing but a loose screw, and we repair the whole bicycle. Here are some ways that you can help improve corrupted hard drives.
Check power supply
If you are using an external hard drive, then it is possible that storage media is taking power only from the USB port. Try to unplug the hard drive and reconnect it to the process of hard drive fix. You can also try another USB port on your computer, maybe you are not working properly Make sure that you have not disabled your USB port. Some external hard drives come with a separate power supply, so if one is working properly then do a check. In the case of the internal hard drive, the power supply can be a bit difficult to check. However, if your PC is detecting internal drives, then there is hardly any chance that something is wrong with power.
If your PC can not detect it, try hard drive on another PC
It is possible that only your PC cannot read the hard drive and you need to repair the hard drive accordingly. Connect the storage media to another PC, maybe you will feel relief if you see it working on another PC.If this works, there may be some problem with device drivers installed on your computer that needs to be fixed. You can restore drivers on your hard drive by going to this PC (right-click)> Manage> Device Manager. Right-click on the name of your hard drive and click Uninstall. Now, restart the computer and connect the hard drive. Drivers will start installing automatically in most cases.
You may also consider replacing the drive letter given to the storage media to restore the corrupted hard drive. Go to this PC (right-click)> Manage> Disk Management. Right-click on your hard drive and click Change Drive letter and path ....
Now, click on the drive letter and click Change. Select the new drive letter and click on OK. It will show a warning that other programs can not work, click Yes. The problem will only be when you change the letters of an internal drive where you have installed the apps, mostly Windows drives.
Check your hard drive for errors
Windows has an inbuilt mechanism for hard disk recovery, using which you can check storage media, internal or external HDD, errors. In various cases, when you connect the machine to the drive, Windows will ask you to automatically scan the drive. If it does not, you can go to this PC> Drive (right-click)> Properties> Tools tab. Click on the check.
The hard drive we use on our desktops and laptops has a built-in hardware monitoring technology, which is called S.M.A.R.T. Now, Windows does not have any apps to display data collected by S.M.A.R.T. But you can check the overall situation in CMD by using WMIC (Windows Management Instrumentation Command-Line) and try your hand at repairing the broken hard disk.
- Open CMD in Admin mode.
- Type Walmi and press Enter.
- The disk drive gets status and press enter.
This will show the smart position of your hard drstarts OK, that means everything is fine. But if this is not right, then you should worry about the death of your hard drive in the future. When you connect several hard drives, things get messy, this name does not display, so, you will see an 'OK' for each connected hard drive.
Alternatively, you can bring S.M.A.R.T. Details using a utility named CrystalDiskInfo. It can show you the number related to the personal hard drive characteristics, as well as the overall health, temperature, number of starters, the total number of active hours, etc.
