Fix CHKDSK Cannot Continue in Read-Only Mode

The Chkdsk command is required to troubleshoot common disk related problems. But, sometimes, it may fail to execute, and you may see an error message "CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode." But, you can fix it.

Solution 1: A CHKDSK Schedule on Reboot

Solution 2: Run CHKDSK in Recovery Mode

• First of all, open the Start menu, click on the power icon, press the Shift key on the keyboard and click Restart. It will take you to a blue window.

• This will restart your PC. Just log in with your username and password and run the following commands.

C: is the drive letter.

Solution 3: Remove Read-Only Mode

If the above two methods fail, then it is the last solution to fix CHKDSK, cannot continue in read only mode. You can change the read-only mode in general. To do this, you can use third-party partition tools like Mintool, AOMI Partition Assistant etc. You can also try to delete the read-only mode using the command prompt. Here are the instructions.

• First, open Command Prompt as Administrator.
• Now, type diskpart and press enter.
• After that, type the list disc and press enter. You will see a list of disks such as disk 0, disk 1, disk 2, etc.
• Now, type "select disk 0" or any other disk number you want.
• To check the current state of the disk, you can enter "Attributes Disc" and hit. It will show whether the disc is read-only or not.
• Now, run the following command to remove the read-only mode.

                                                    attributes disk clear readonly
